      Default Thambi ~ An Opinion

      Venue ~ Kairali, Thrissur
      Showtime ~ 02:30 PM
      Status ~ 40%

When you are to a hall expecting a Jeethu Joseph movie, its similar to the expectations of an M Night Shyamalan movie. There will be a big reveal as we come close towards the climax. So with such an expectation in the mind, it will be always a challenge for Jeethu to make a film no matter whatever the genre is. Thambi is the “actual” debut of Jeethu Joseph in Tamil Film Industry where he has something to do creatively. Also this is the other film from Jeethu (not considering Spanish Remake) where the script was written by someone else.

Gnanamoorthy (Sathyaraj) is a big shot in Mettupalayam whose son Saravanan ran away 15 years ago. He finally meets Saravanan (Karthi) in Goa and things started to get complicated regarding the genuineness of Saravanan’s identity. The theme is pretty familiar and the incidents are not exactly fresh. But Jeethu along with his writers was able to keep audience engaged by using the commercial ingredients in the right dose. Its a rare case in Tamil movies where the comedy, romance, songs didn’t play as a hurdle but helped with the narration (in establishing relationship and character sketch). Things started to get further interesting when Jeethu wears his thriller jacket and started to bring twists & thrills which elevates the movie. While one twist fell flat, the others worked well (eventhough I was able to predict the climax a bit earlier than expected). Considering the fact that its a Jeethu movie, he had a logical approach (Unlike “Kaalidas”). I should appreciate Jeethu for able to maintain the emotional quotient throughout the movie even when its in a thriller mode. This seems to be Jeethu’s strength which we saw in Drishyam. On downside, the freshness factor was not there. Never I was like “WOW” in any scene. Still as a commercial entertainer, Thambi is one of the finest works from Tamil movie where everything synced well.

Thambi’s biggest strength is the performance from the cast. Jyothika, Sathyaraj & Karthi were the lifeline of this movie. Sathyaraj was easily leading the cast with his brilliant performance. From a point onwards, it was simply Sathyaraj show. I don’t remember when was the last time he got such a good role. Jyothika underplayed to an extend which was a positive sign but still cannot escape complete from being a bit too dramatic. Karthi on other hand was absolute treat to watch. His strength was unlike other Tamil Stars, he knows that the other characters require space and its not his show to strengthen the movie. While performing comedy, action, romance, emotional scenes, he was in top gear. Anson Paul’s performance and makeover was nothing but “terrible”. Bala on other hand went a bit over while performing his best scene in the movie. Hareesh Perardi, Nikhila Vimal, Seetha, Ilavarasu & Sowckar Janaki did their supporting roles well.

“Thaalelo” was the pick from the album. I don’t know whether I am disappointed from the 96 music director because the situations he got were kinda clichéd. So there was nothing much to do. But the original score was outstanding right from the piano bit during the credits.

R D Rajashekhar was able to capture the beauty of Ooty/Mettupalayam along with the glamour of Goa. Yet the slightly dark tone conveyed the mood of the movie. Editing by V S Vinayak was good!!

As a commercial entertainer where you don’t have to keep your brains back home, heros not delivering punchlines every 15 mins, Thambi is recco especially for the terrific performance from the cast led by the trio JSK and Jeethu Joseph signature all over it.
