I saw a lot of reviewers from various portals as well as users from Book My Show putting down this movie because it is not "woke enough". That it does not accurately portray the trials and tribulations faced daily by the gay/lesbian community. I concur. It does not. And it doesn't need to be and it doesn't claim to be. The basic purpose behind this movie is to be nothing more than a laugh riot romcom with a same sex relationship at the centre. And this is a fantastic love story. One that absolutely knocks out the superficial man woman love story that we get from Bollywood in the name of intense romance. But if it does start a conversation among small town folk regarding homophobia and how homosexuality is not a disease, then it's an added bonus.
Right from the very first scene, the laughs are non stop. In fact the makers can be accused of throwing whatever funny lines they've cooked up at the screen in the hopes that some of them stick. Truth be told, most of them stick. The score is fun ,the songs are delightfully performed and the Gabru remix is incredibly catchy. The cast is absolutely phenomenal. Whether it's the uncle and aunt character or the Badhaai Ho couple, everyone plays off one another and the audience is laughing their asses off.
Unlike some other actors who make socially conscious movies on one hand while acting in homophobic movies on the other,Ayushman shows us that he's the only Bollywood actors with balls and that when the time comes,he'll actually walk the walk. Jitu Bhaiya ,in his film debut is absolutely delightful. The emotional scenes, between the couple and the dad towards the end genuinely left me teary eyed.
I watched this one at a 1000 seater single screen packed to the rafters with families and none of them jeered when the males kissed each other. That doesn't mean that if someone close to them comes out, that they'll behave in an understanding fashion. But atleast they have come out to watch a movie based on same sex love. It's a small victory. Significant nonetheless. And for this effort,I'll bow my metaphorical hat to Ayushman. He doesn't need to wave the flag or make eloquent statements. He just needs to keep doing what he does best . Carry on
