      Default Forensic: Thoughts

As everybody knows, the movie released to rave reviews on day 1... Then more opinions poured in regarding logical problems, a shoddy 2nd half and unflattering comparisons to Ancham Pathira(so i guess ill have to share my thoughts comparing both) which significantly lowered my expectations and began watching with conflicted thoughts...

Right of the bat, neither ancham pathira nor forensic can hold a candle up to ratsasan and the tense mood it created... But i felt forensic told the story in a a much more novel setting than AP which was just a straightforward investigative drama without any whodunit element... Malayalee audiences are mostly strangers to competent medicolegal or forensic shows that are produced in excess in the west, so it was a refreshing change to see a malayalam serial killer movie that relies on forensic science and related professionals...

Coming to plot, it starts off with a standard cliche flashback(which AP did better with the brilliant indrans cameo)... 'Forensic' title card comes up oozing blood, which was ripped right off from 'Dexter' title card. Key players are introduced... Tovino is introduced in a way too familiar to how patrick jane is portrayed on 'the mentalist', but it was still cool... mamtha okke routine introduction... Movie gains steam as the investigation part begins... I have to admit that the interval block was a pretty surprising one and I didnt see that coming (was expecting something lamer like

)... 2nd half has lots of twists and turns which frankly, i didnt mind as it kept me engrossed till the end(something AP couldnt do, after revealing the killer)... albeit lots of the plot choices were illogical, but im not a stickler for realism onscreen as long as it keeps me entertained... The killer's identity was predictable though especially after

... They manage to wrap it up without too much damage, granted it did get wobbly towards the end and the answers given led to even more questions... The technical aspects and visual effects were topnotch which had a crucial role to play in such a genre (albeit the labs and equipments looked straight out of some western sophisticated show, far from the real state of desi forensic labs)... It managed to seamlessly blend in medical facts like Transplant chimerism into its narrative and props for that... Scores of inconsistencies and plotpoints devoid of logic can be seen, but I choose to ignore them...

Coming to perfomances, while AP had a host of of stellar supporting perfomances, forensic doesnt have much to boast about in that department... Mamtha portrays a typical halfwitted shrew... The only novelty about her casting is that, she and saiju kurup appear as a pair onscreen once again after their debut in 'mayukham'... Reba is a classic dumb bimbo... However, Tovino did impress me after a string of underwhelming perfomances including lucifer(his character was strong, he wasnt)... Here, he does succeed in embodying the body language and attitude of a pragmatic forensic personnel, something which was lacking in kunchacko boban's portrayal in AP...

Overall, i loved the movie maybe even a smidge more than AP(which was overrated for me by the time i watched it as only positives were showered on it)... Maybe the dampened expectations had a role to play or maybe im a bit partial to medicolegal thrillers and movies that keep you guessing till the end... Either way, I had a great time...
