Default Badhai Do: An Interesting and Thought Provoking Experiment in Mainstream Indian Cinema

      Venue: Netflix

When I first heard of this film, I never felt that excited since somehow the promos/posters seemed reminiscent of Badhai Ho. But the film has come out to be one of the path-breaking mainstream attempts in depicting gay and lesbian relationships in Indian cinema, sensitively and with love.

I loved the creative steps the makers took in depicting the homosexual relationship dramas and how refreshingly the movie subverted the traditional honeymoon, meeting scenes (the first meeting between Simi and Shardul was hilarious) which generally gave the film a positive vibe.

Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Padnekar deserve plaudits for agreeing to act in this sort of a movie. One could tell they really believed in their characters and the overall message. That it has come out of an industry known for its DDLJs, Kabhie Khushi Ghams is all the more welcoming. Badhai Do really surprised me in that though I expected a mainstream romantic entertainer between the two protagonists despite their sexual orientations, the movie actually explores those particular relationships with remarkable restraint and understatement. The performances of the protagonists are terrific, particularly Padnekar who has the meatier role. As in many such small-town dramas, there is a large host of supporting characters, but even in their depiction there is no over-the-topness. The direction and narration are top-notch and we really get into the journeys of Shardul and Simi. The movie has unhurriedly yet movingly portrayed how they overcome their respective challenges in a conservative society. The scene where Shardul comes out to his family was particularly moving.

Accompanying this touching saga is some lovely music, effective songs and excellent cinematography. The performances of all the actors and actresses are really worth a mention. Though the film is a message drama, it has been packaged in an entertaining manner.

On the negative side, the movie could have explored the arcs of the lovers of the protagonists a bit more. Especially the Guru Narayan character's introduction and story felt a bit rushed as compared to the Kabir character. There are quite a bit of adult jokes and dialogues as well at regular intervals which may not suit all tastes.

I have some issues with the way the film concluded and its final narrative arcs. This brought down the movie somewhat.

Nonetheless, I would urge all to check out this film with an open mind. It really shows us that no matter who we love and our orientation, Love wins over all and the movie is a powerful message conveying how those who are LGBTQ should be accepted in society as ordinary human beings like everyone else. A very positive movie which makes us think about the need for change in the way we see love given societal constraints.

The soundtrack of this one has some really good melodies. Atak Gaya, Seedhe saade and Manzooriyaan
