Default John Luther ~ An Opinion

      Venue
      ~ TCR Ragam
      Showtime ~ 03:30 PM
      Status - 75%

On lazy Saturday, I decided to take another 21 gms risk by devoting 131 minutes and more for John Luther along with my family. After the experience, I recall how many hyperlink films were a trend post the success of Traffic where majority failed due to cliched approach and poor scripting. This is the same thing happening with current trend ie bloody serial killing. Whether its the OTT products like Anthakshari or Big Screen ventures like Nizhal, 21 gms, Forensic, all failed to make a mark including the much overrated Anjaam Paathira. Unlike Traffic, this trend started from Tamil Nadu with a film called Raathshasan (Eventough we had Memories & Grandmaster earlier with lesser blood)

Those who saw the trailer will wonder why the heck that interval moment was revealed. And did the makers make use of that on an interesting manner, A BIG NO. Abhjith Joseph clearly looked lazy with his narration and far more lazier writing. He tried all the gimmicks like misty frames, vehicles U-turning in slow motion, rain with orange lighting etc. But there is not a single shot that can be rated "fresh". Everything was a Deja Vu and Abhjith just made a lazy piece of shit in name of thriller. Once the so called climax was revealed, he poured another cliched stuff of explaining the childhood story of this psycho killer regarding how blood made him psycho and how tragedy made him a bigger psycho. And this will be a sin from my side, but I dozed off towards the last 10-15 minutes after the maker's big reveal (which was easily guessed). So I don't know whether he was doing this for many years or Psycho mode was activated one fine night like "Forensic". The investigation scenes, as mentioned before, was cliched and boring and the unnecessary family drama was looking better than the thrilling moments which says how shoddy this movie is.

Jayasurya lacks screen presence to lift the movie with his charisma. Deepak Parambol was behind him keeping on saying "Sir Sir Sir". Siddhique and Sreelakshmi were not required in a portion which has nothing to do with the main plot while Athmeeya was wasted (not literally considering her acting skills).

Shaan Rahman tried his level best with the score and OK songs along with the visuals from from Roby Varghese to create an atmosphere. The sound mixing team has also done a good job to support the movie (The Anjaam Paathira team).

But all the gimmicks won't work if you don't have a solid script or a fresh narration. John Luther is perhaps one of the worst thrillers I have seen in recent times which bored me almost 100 minutes out of 131 minutes.

Thanks. These obsession over villains' past is becoming too repetitive in films these days.

Also there is some sort of emotional justification for such characters.

These makers are good at build up with gimmicks and suspense shots and evidence reveal. But when the matter has to come out, we receive a feeble stuff.

This is the issue with people following the trend. Observe any recent thrillers except CBI5, it's all build up using gimmicks with technical support. No solid writing at all. John Luther didn't have a single interesting moment too at the high points ie interval and climax. So it was a far terrible experience.
