Default Jurassic World - Dominion ~ An Opinion

I think post Jurassic Park, the makers clearly have no idea what to do with these magnificent creatures who used to rule the world once upon a time. There mere sight of these creatures can attract large audience and garner millions of dollars at box office. All they need is a fine plot, some terrific action sequences which thrills you and bombastic climax featuring T Rex. Jurassic Park came out brilliantly based on these but post Jurassic Park, there wasn't a film made that could come close to its magnificence.

The biggest issue in Dominion is the lack of conviction. Now Collin Trevorrow simply rehashed Jurassic Park moments and ended up by providing ample amount of nostalgia to make Jurassic World. In its sequel, the makers rehashed The Lost World plot where the great Steven Spielberg failed to deliver. But the place where Fallen Kingdom stood above Lost World was J A Bayona's visual sense with a touch of horror. He really had nothing to work on as a script. But once Collin makes a comeback with the 3rd and Final Movie of the Rebooted Trilogy, he just had no idea what he has to do. Now in the prequel, we know dinosaurs are all over the world and now its a clash between humans and them. We expect normally the makers to address that issue and make a movie, at least in the lines of Roland Emmerich films. But Collin just took a whole new route, which was unexpected of course, and he came up with the perhaps the worst work in the whole 6 movie series.

Collin was juggling with 3 plots and trust me none created an impact. Now who the F cares about locusts and its DNA in a Dinosaur Universe?? I mean how can be someone so ridiculously stupid to make a plot of such kind as a finale and how the heck did the studios approve it. Putting this as the base plot (if so), Collins adds two subplots. One featuring the Old Jurassic Park Trio and other featuring New Jurassic World Trio. And believe it or not, none featured Dinosaurs as the main subject. And we see Collin jumping from one plot to another and using dinosaurs as mere gimmicks. This is Dominion in short. And as expected there are numerous references like Dr Malcom's (Jeff Goldblum) almost bare shirt moment, Dr Ellie (Laura Dern) handling the power section etc. Unfortunately none created any impact due to a ridiculous plot confused screenplay. The area where Collins decided to use dinosaurs was to cover the weakness of the movie and except the Malta chase (which is quite average comparing to other Jurassic movies), there was no goosebump moment. And as we were expecting T Rex once again to save the humans and the movie (just like she did in Jurassic World) with an Epic Faceoff, TRUST ME, turned out to be the worst ending ever for a Jurassic Movie. It was simply a rehash of Jurassic World climax within no build up. On a positive side, there were 2-3 shots which could have been great poster moments.

Regarding performances from the cast, the original trio comprising of Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum & Laura Dern gave their best and made some poor scenes watchable mainly due to nostalgia factor. While the original trio, Bruce Dallas simply lacked charisma, Chris Pratt was repeating what he was doing in the previous movies & Isabelle Sermon got a more important character than the prequel considering a plot is dedicated exclusively to her. DeWanda Wise was the one who made the biggest impact amongst all the actors as the smart and adventurous rogue pilot. Campbell Scott was really bad in a poorly written role. Mamoudou Athie made a noticeable presence while rest of the actors from the prequel comprising of B D Wong, Justice Smith & Omar Sy plays small roles.

As far as Dinos are concerned, it looked like T Rex & Blue had issues with script considering their screentime and role. Thats the biggest mistake from the makers. While the Giganotosaurus didn't create any impact. The only fun moment I saw was the Dino which swam through the ice cold water. And yeah, the famous Dilophosaurus make a noticeable comeback. Then there were some new faces which unfortunately the makers didn't give any focus!!!

Regarding the technical side, the CGI was great for an IMAX experience. But the editing, Mark Sanger was pretty shoddy during an night sequence featuring the cast and Giganotosaurus. Still credit to him for making the movie racy during its 146 mins runtime.

I have to accept that I am extremely disappointed to see the way the series ended and I really wish the makers taken the poll to retain J A Bayona for Dominion. I was one of the few who supported Bayona expecting this danger. Alas it happened and what was one of the impactful film during my childhood which had a shoddy 3rd part, JW 3 also repeated the same...in an equally pathetic manner. An opinion coming from a hardcore Jurassic Movie fan.

      Ratings - 3/10

P:S - There were two short works as promotion/prologue of Dominion featuring a family in the woods and another to attract audience to theater during Covid 19. I am sure Collin have no role in those works considering the quality those films possessed!!

BTW, I saw Top Gun - Maverick once again and this time from IMAX on 08/06/2022......As expected, a movie made for IMAX experience and gave me an immense pleasure not even a second of boredom despite of my second viewing. I feel sorry for those who missed this gem of a movie and those who couldn't catch it IMAX to experience it completely!!!!

I felt that Dominion is a movie about a genetically modified locust which happens to be in an environment with dinosaurs.

Even if you eliminate the dinosaurs from the movie you can still make it in a low budget

It's like London Bridge movie which can be made in a kerala backdrop.
