Default The Black Phone ~ An Opinion

      Date ~ 28/06/2022
Venue ~ INOX, Shobha Mall, Thrissur
      Screen ~ 05
      Showtime ~ 10:40 PM
Status ~ 11 people (including myself)

      One of the important
ingredient in any horror/thriller movie is the setting up an environment for the incidents to take place. Considering the number of movies we saw, the setup can be quite predictable at many places. Now how intriguing the experience is what we care the most despite of cliched moments.

But speaking about The Black Phone, the genre just doesn't ends with horror & thriller. You can add genres like supernatural & survival to it. And these genres are not used for the sake of it but there was a clear plot which keeps us glued to the screen. Director Scott Derrickson, who impressed me with Sinister (a movie which I rate above the James Wan's Conjuring Universe) & Deliver Us From Evil (which surprised me with some good spine-chilling moment), looked totally in control with a plot which is kinda Deja Vu. Trust me, you won't find anything extra special on the paper as far as writing is concerned. But Scott simply knows how to engage the audience and smartly introduce good moments by not depending on cliched jump scares. One particular area which I found it quite interesting is the way Scott used the religious side of a character (which is often not used...at least in a positive way) without causing any hindrance during the narration. The delicate manner at which he handled that area shows he is the right man for the job. Else this film would have been a stereotyped cliched experience. Often we might question the logical side of the movie

but Scott was able to provide a clear explanation towards the end. The final act was brilliantly executed and shows that every moment in the movie has a key role to play somewhere or the other.

Regarding performances, Ethan Hawke was in a whole different zone while playing this gruesome character. Even while donning a mask almost 99.9% of the movie, he was able to do what Hugo Weaving did with V in V for Vendetta. He was equally supported by a brilliant performance from Mason Thames, who was able to display all the emotions & agony of his character. Madeline McGraw was handling her character to make it look charming yet strong & brave. Jeremy Davies was superb as the alcoholic & abusive father.

The sound recording & mixing especially the scenes in the basement gave a reason why someone should catch this movie in theaters. The frames possessed a Sinister mood with a backdrop of 70s.

Overall, I suggest this movie for people who loves to watch movies which rarely depends on jump scares and yet keep on edge of the seat. After this experience, I really missed Scott Derrickson in the Doctor Strange Sequel. If MCU would have given him full control, he might have made a classic stuff with it.

I had seen the trailer a few months back! Felt like they gave away too much in the trailer.
