Default Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Vikram: Reviews

      Rocketry (Tamil)

Venue: Novo Ibn Battutta, 1 pm, 1st July
      Status: 5 people

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is an exhilirating biopic from start to finish. The 1st half is particularly refreshing in that it makes scientific terms, processes and collaborations so cool. The makers have balanced the entertainment aspect with the technical jargon of scientists in that era. Madhavan in this stretch is really charming yet there is a sequence mid-way which highlights the ruthlessness of Nambi. Who would have thought that an engine launch would be so interesting and tense? The little details are also well captured, be it the love for filter coffee, how the Indian scientists learn a lot more than technological know-how from their Western counterparts, and so forth. The film even moves into James Bond territory in places.

The 2nd half is tricky to execute because of the nature of the subject matter i.e. Nambi's imprisonment, release and pardon. It isn't a bravura story that is cinematic, but has to be told, and towards the end one is left with a lump on throat. There are several aspects that bring the film down from greatness, the lack of attention to the dynamic relationship between Nambi and his wife (Simran, brilliant as ever), the average score by Sam CS and the long-drawn out climax, which keeps going, even when you think it's all over. On the positive side, Rocketry moves at a brisk pace mostly, the performances of the foreign actors and actresses, usually a sore point in Indian Cinema, is top notch, and the makers do not shy away from depicting the human, flawed side of Nambi. The sound design is particularly a highlight as is the terrific cameo performance by Surya, who moves from a quietly cocky celebrity to a genuinely moved common observer.

Madhavan is magnificent as the titular character, he has given it his all.

All in all, the production values and performances along with dialogues in multiple languages make this more an effective international film as much as its origins in India. The movie moves seamlessly between the present interview and past sequences.

I could go on and on about this film which hasn't left my mind, but would implore all to check out the theatrical experience. The 1st introductory sequence...I wont say more. R: 3.75/5

      Vikram (Tamil)

Venue: Novo Ibn Battutta, 12:45 pm, 2nd July
      Status: 40%

The performances are terrific and technically the movie is sound with a terrific BGM by Anirudh, but when there is no story, no intriguing characters and a dull narrative, it all doesn't matter. The only Wow moments in this pedestrian film are the Agent Tina fight sequence and possibly the interval scene. That's too few whistle-worthy moments in a near 3 hour film. Fafa delivers his finest performance in recent times while Kamal makes a brilliant comeback, fit as a fiddle in the action sequences. His initial mute portions are especially noteworthy and worth applause. Vijay Sethupathi does his best in a poorly written role. It's all for nothing as the film has an especially dull 1st half with a non-interesting investigation...Spoiler, we know Kamal will be alive and that he will be a positive character. The 'baby, baby' romance is another sore point. I am all for build ups before the main character is introduced, but this particular one was too long for its own good. Towards the interval point itself the film was already becoming a stretched affair.

The 2nd half over-corrects with one empty action sequence after another, where all the performers give it their all, but it's all for naught. The less said about the logic of taking a child in the midst of an intense combat scene, the better. Surya makes a memorable cameo at the end, but it's all too little, too late. No film is memorable without a solid scripting foundation. This one is neither a good action film thanks to the dullness of the initial hour or so, forget a memorable drama. The stakes are not interesting, all the more disappointing from the filmmaker behind Kaithi.

Forget an intense drama, the film is not even entertaining. It was a slog to the finish line and came to the point where you just wanted it to end.

Given all the hype and hoopla, this is personally one of the most disappointing movie experiences of the year for me. R: 2.75/5
