Default Ela Veezha Poonchira ~ An Opinion

      Venue
      ~ TCR Ragam
      Showtime ~ 12:30 PM
      Status ~ 30-40%

Let me tell you a scenario. When you have loads of low budget movies releasing back to back, it will started to become and overdose to an extend you start to reject any such movie coming on way. During those rejections, you might come up with gems which later when watched in a private viewing will be hailed as a classic and thus a cult following commences. This is the first reaction I had after watching Ela Veezha Poonchira.

The movie is pretty simple in its plotline and the 80% of the movie goes into the detailing and build up to something. After writing two well made or brilliant Joseph & Naayattu, the scriptwriter, Shahi Kabir dons the role of a director and surprisingly the script is written by Nidheesh & Shaji. Why because I expected Shaji, whose realistic cop stories, would have been the writer of his debut work. Unlike Naayattu or Joseph, Shahi relies a lot of technical side to construct an environment so that the audience are able to relate to the tough conditions, loneliness and the possible hazards in their profession. These are commonality in all the 3 films. Now while watching EVP (Especially in a good theater), we can feel the scent and coolness of that environment. And with 2 characters to play, Shahi Kabir introduces a crime from where the movie leads to a different direction with a superb ending.

The strengths of this movie is familiar. Good Acting, Superlative Detailing, Excellent Cinematography & Above all the Runtime. Now after the experience, when you rewind back, you will see the smartness in the making as well as the script. But the issue was the timing of the movie. If this movie was released directly in OTT, this would have been hailed as a brilliant debut (Trust me, all those Northies will start hailing it as soon as it releases in OTT). But as I mentioned earlier, there is an overdose of such films which leads to rejection. Had this movie released during 2011-2014, it would have created an impact. But post CoVid, its pretty clear that people wanted to watch big screen entertainers with money or masala or both poured onscreen. The response of a Kaduva & EVP conveys and underlines the fact. Another major issue is the use of sync sound. I just couldn't understand what the heck Sudhy Koppa & Soubin Shahir were talking to each other in many scenes. Its as if they are mumbling to each other. This is where subtitles play a key role and in future, such movies require subtitles even in Kerala too.

Regarding performances, Soubin Shahir was fine as the cop and did create an impact in many important scenes. Sudhy Koppa was OKayish and I honestly didn't expect much from him. It didn't affect the experience at all. Jude Anthany Joseph was the only other recognizable character in the movie. Then there was an actor who seriously looked like a dupe of Murali Gopy. Again due to sync sound, i just can't make out what the heck he was blabbering onscreen.

The cinematography by Manesh Madhavan literally brings audience to the Elveezhapoonchira along with the sound recording whether its the tough roads towards the destination or the misty frames with a sense of crime and loneliness. The editing by Kiran Das was perfect whether its the runtime or the keeping the mood consistently. I slightly disagree with Anil Johnson's choice of filmy bgm during a chase which I felt went off sync with the overall mood. Other than that he did well to support the film. I honestly can't find the contributions of art department other than a wireless office or lightning conduction & windmill.

I wish this film was released during a time when industry demanded such films. This would have been a sparkling debut for Shahi Kabir when you consider the commercial factors too. But alas, the environment wasn't conducive currently for such films, thanks to OTT and some seriously bad movies marketed as realistic movies. I have a feeling this will end up as a cult classic. Still the sync sound was a huge huge negative in an almost brilliant film. Shahi Kabir joins the list of makers in my wishlist to do a Mohanlal film.

      Thanks Intex...want to watch this.

Soubin is also to blame for his poor selection of films prior to this one for the cold response

Still I don't think it would have done well at box office. But I agree with your viewpoint!!! Still the response from the audience was cold as Elaveezhapoonchira

Yeah, not much difference. Theater successes are hyped films or star-studded films these days demanding a theater experience.

Hope Malayalam cinema recognises the change and adapts accordingly.
