Default Malayankunju: Sajimon's sparkling debut with memorable acts by Fahad Fazil and AR Rahman

Venue: Vox Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates, 1:45 pm
      Status: Around 5 people

Malayankunju has had a bit of a bumpy ride to the theaters. Initially touted as an Amazon Prime release, the film then last-minute arrived in theaters with limited buzz. What excited me about the film was the involvement of Mahesh Narayanan, who had earlier thrilled audiences with Take Off and still remained a favourite despite the slight mis-step in Malik. Aside from him the other factor was AR Rahman. I didnt really buy the whole 30 years after Malayalam cinema thing but it was his choice of the genre which was exciting after the heavily under-rated 127 Hours, another survival thriller in a closed space which was made memorable by the music.

Malayankunju opens leisurely and takes some time to get going, and in the initial portions, I felt ARR had over-scored the film. It seemed another realistic type movie which didn't need such a rich score, and felt like the music was added as an after-thought. But after a while it was realised the score was deliberately dramatic to musically explain what was going on in Anikuttan's head. Fahadh Fazil started off with a sense of deja vu but mid-way through the 1st half, the well-explained and logical flashback added layers to the character and from then we end up eagerly waiting for his redemption. There are a number of supporting acts that are solid but the film isn't really about them. From the first scene itself the technical team immerse you in the world of the village in Idukki and prepare us for the exhilirating 2nd half. There are 3 or 4 mini-songs in the movie each of which are well-placed and leave an impact especially the final one (which wasn't released initially-such a shame). There are some messages that are peppered throughout the film which make you think without distracting you from the on-screen happenings.

If the 1st half is slow-paced, the 2nd half is really quick. So quick that if you buy snacks at the interval chances are you won't finish. The 45 or so minutes of that 2nd half is film-making at it's finest. It didn't really require a musical score, but the score nonetheless lends emotional gravity to Anil's redemption journey and comprises some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard this year. Couple that with a real immersiveness into the landscape of the landslide, astonishing cinematography and sound along with a heart-breaking performance by Fahad Fazil, and you are left with your hearts full of joy. There is a final 15 minutes segment which forms the emotional crux of the movie with AR Rahman saving the best for the last. It feels so surreal to say this but at last here is a film which does full justice to AR Rahman's score and songs. And at last here is a movie which taps into the immense talent that is Fahadh Fazil. As the saying goes, 'Ellathinum oru samayam undu Dasa' and with Malayankunju, these two talents make this an experience to savour. Mahesh Narayanan's cinematography and story-telling sense is visualised really effectively by Sajimon and the entire crew deserve plaudits for rendering such a marvellous cinematic experience that can make our industry proud.

If I say any more this review will turn into an essay. But whether you are a lover of AR Rahman, Fahadh Fazil or just good cinema, I firmly believe in my humble opinion, that Malayankunju will be one of the best that Indian Cinema has to offer in 2022.
