I believe after cinematographers turning into directors, now editors started to become directors. And I believe they have a better control over the flow of the movie and presentation which clearly conveys the importance of their role in cinema. First it was Mahesh Narayanan through Take Off and now Abhinav Sundar Nayak with Mukundan Unni Associates. And I have to say both made sparkling debuts through their respective films.
When was the last time you have an unapologetically out n out dark humour where the lead character has no signs of white? I have not seen any film till date from Malayalam and Mukundan Unni Associates does that and does that extremely well. This character driven movie shares resemblance in the structure of movies where we have an underdog or an outcast (not completely) who starts to climb up when he grabs an opportunity and then he starts to monopolize the whole game. He influences, buys, eliminates all the people who either cause hindrance to his path of success. Mukundan Unni premise reminds you of an old movies called Vakeel Vasudev (which was poorly made movie). Now Vasudev possess usual traits of a typical mainstream hero despite of his crookedness. Now with Mukundan Unni, that character is painted absolute black and thus the whole look of the movie changes which leads to a fresh narration. Now Abhinav along with his cowriter, Vimal Gopalakrishnan opted for a Gautham Menon style voice over where he conveys the character's mood. Yet they were able to bring out LOL moments through the voiceover that keeps the audience hooked throughout without providing a sense of repetition. For me the brilliance of the direction (& editing) was felt even when the movie completely focuses on the premise, which gives very less space to explore beyond a circle, I was totally engaged by the happenings on screen. The approach was fresh (right from the opening credits) and we can see it in the frames too. And with terrific dialogues & superlative detailing (especially the ones for character defination), I believe Abhinav simply hit the ball out of the park. The final dialogue is one of the punchiest line I have heard in recent times.
Vineeth Sreenivasan is simply having a great year in 2022. Started with VS, the writer, director, singer, in Hridayam, now VS, the actor, was simply terrific as Mukundan Unni. I don't think after seeing the performance, I don't think anyone can think of any actor in this role. I rate this performance along with Chaappa Kurishu as his best. He was superbly supported by Suraaj Venjaramoodu. The two female leads were simply superb especially Aarsha Baiju. Then Biju Sopanam, Manikandan Pattambi, Jagadeesh, Sudheesh, Noble etc form the rest of the cast along with Ranjith.
Sibi Mathew Alex score synced well with the movie. Despite of limited locations, Vishwajith Odukkathil maintained the mood of the movie with dark color tone. Accident scenes were superbly shot and executed. And regarding editing, Pitch Perfect (As expected).
Overall, Mukundan Unni Associates is simply one of the Best Movies in recent times and the Best Dark Humour I have seen from Indian Cinema. You can clearly see the director's name presented boldly above the movie's title witha sense of ownership, which I havent seen from other directors. After the experience, I believe Abhinav can confidently claim the ownership of a brilliant movie.
