Question: Do you find a difference in your writing, while working with different composers? Do words come out from your pen, based on whether the tune is IR's or ARR's?

VM: Illayaraja's tunes have the "tamil" touch to them. AR Rahman's tunes have the whole world's touch. Illayaraja is a man from the villages. He infused folk music which he grew up with, and various rural music forms into his fulm music. Though he blended it with Western music, basically he is a village man, and he ruled folk music. This "tamil" touch in his music was easy for me, because, I'm a village man too. I too grew up with the village music.

But, when writing for AR Rahman, I needed to fly to different countries in the west, and make myself aware of different music forms which were new to me. It's a bit difficult to write lyrics for AR Rahman's tunes. He doesn't make ordinary, usual tunes. He makes fresh new tunes for which it is almost impossible to filt lyrics!

I once asked Rahman, "Why do you torture me like this, by breaking the phrases in your tunes like this?"
Rahman replied with a smile "Anyone who knows Tamil can write lyrics for an ordinary, normal tune. Writing for such challenging tunes will make you special, and give you that pride of a true 'poet' "

For a question which I asked with some pain, he replied with a smile!

Music label Saregama India Ltd has acquired music rights of A R Rahman's latest Hollywood film Couples Retreat for the Indian market. Couples Retreat is Rahman’s first international project after his Academy Award winning score of Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Saregama India vice president Atul Churamani confirmed their latest acquisition and said, "It's possibly the first Hollywood soundtrack that we have acquired. The fact that it has some fantastic piece of music and instrumentals really makes it stand out," he says.
Churamani agrees that being a soundtrack, the music of Couples Retreat is different to what the Indian listeners are used to, "But Rahman's work is transcendental - it's for everyone- not just for the English speaking audience.”
The Vince Vaughn starrer romcom Couples Retreat is expected to release in India by January 2010. “We plan to release the soundtrack of the film by November – two months before the film hits the theatre,” says Churamani. It is also learnt that Rahman is very keen to promote the album in India.
OST Couples Retreat is a mix of operatic instrumentals and some inspiring reggae influenced tracks. The sound track was first unveiled by Rahman through his official facebook page in October when the film was released internationally. Though the film got mixed reviews from the international audience, the music of the film was largely appreciated.
The international rights for the films soundtrack are with Relativity Music Group, LA.
