In order to achieve considerable and consistent progress in sport, a hard and focused taskmaster is required. Just look the Olympic tallies of the Chinese and you'll know what I'm talking about. A coach like Kumble ought to be celebrated. Yet, in our nation, he's being waylaid to the kerb while the prospective replacements include a diarrhea mouthed bootlicker and someone who can't keep it in his pants. Disgusting

Individual sports and team sports comparison is not fair IMO and especially in the case of cricket. Captain's role and impact is the same (or sometimes more) than a coach in a sport like cricket. In soccer and all a captain is just for the namesake but not in cricket.

      Found it an interesting read!!

Statutory Warning - Star Crazed Fans...Beware...Better Avoid!!!

Indian Cricket Team ~ A dais for ego clash, petty politics, star worship and many so

Have been watching the game for over 3 decades including the dismal performance in the recently concluded finals by a overhyped team, there is one thing I believe the team shared among themselves. Ego Clash, Petty Politics, Star Worship & Many More.

The country has its own taste in claiming a player "God" or "Superstar" or "Greatest Player". The taste is mainly concentrating on batsman with great stroke play. Check out the ADs, Big Pays, Fav Players list. You will never find an "Anil Kumble" in the list, who actually happens to the greatest match winner for the team during an era. If India won many test series in home, its because of this player. Not Sachin, Not Dravid and Ganguly. But since the medias rarely recognized and the public never bothered to recognize, we often see him as one of those players. Maybe thats the reason why non burned effigies or wailed out loud when Kumble left his position as coach in a controversial manner.

Kumble's departure reminded me of Greg Chappell. Chappell was one of the greatest batsman of his era and that played a major reason for Ganguly to choose him as successor to a fairly successful John Wright. The biggest error was Chappell was an Australian and he had an Australian vision. They are ready to throw out a Steve Waugh for losing an ODI tournament just to set the best team for the next World Cup which is the common milestone for all cricket boards. This was the only reason I had to fear about regarding Chappell despite of not having a great knowledge about his coaching techniques. As feared, the ego clash commenced regarding whose team was it. Is it Ganguly or Is it Chappell. Since I really remember the cricketing days then just like any youth, Ganguly was struggling and was going through a bad phase with bat after the Aussies discovered a major flaw in his batting technique (short ball with a locked off side field during 2001 Test Series) which was later exploited by almost all teams including Zimbabwe. He had occasional successes like the 120+ in Headingly, 140+ in Gabba and some ODI centuries. But the position of once the next batsman after Tendulkar in the team was no more valid. Chappell recognizing that his lack of form turned out to be a weak link for the team and dared to do the unthinkable. Asking Ganguly to leave captaincy and concentrate on his batting (Something Tendulkar was told to after his failure as captain). Chappell failed to realize that Ganguly was not just the captain of the Indian Cricket Team but also a "Star". He shouldn't have dared to make such a move in a country where star worship is at its peak. Out came effigies in Kolkatha demanding Chappell's head. When the board agreed to Chappell's view, Ganguly was replaced by Dravid and was kept out of team for a while, Chappell became the new villain of the Indian Cricket.

The major error for Chappell's side was failure in understanding the emotions and moods of the public and the team. The common statement from successful coaches of India like Wright, Kirsten is that they just provided a support to the team instead of instructing a tactic or strategy. That given to the captain. I believe thats why I don't blame Fletcher for his failure as a coach because if the above line is true, he didn't have much to do. Gosh! I really wish to get such a job where you are paid handsomely and don't have anything to do. Chappell might have told on face and would have demanded from his players which is a cardinal sin in Indian Cricket especially against superstars.

While most players in the playing XI were against Chappell, Dravid never claimed anything "uncomfortable" working with Chappell. Even when he had an opportunity post retirement, he stayed with his view. While I saw Tendulkar making a antagonist out of Chappell in both his book as well as movie. I was bit surprised (not now) when Tendulkar claimed in his book that Chappell came to his house and plotted a plan against Dravid (asking Tendulkar to be partner in crime which he denied). Now I am wondering why the biggest superstar in the country didn't convey the matter to board??. Did he note down that incident in a diary so that he sell books and tickets in future?. To be honest, I really didn't see Tendulkar making any comment against Chappell or in support of Ganguly during that era. It all started to pop out post World Cup 2007 fiasco.

Chappell might be a great batsman....but was never the man for coaching Indian Cricket Team. Infact I am not sure whether he was a good coach in first place. As mentioned earlier, he was selected based on his record as batsman. Ganguly later had a feud with another Australian Coach named John Buchanan. This time it was during IPL first season when he was captain for KKR. Buchanan was also selected in consultation with Ganguly and the difference in this selection was Buchanan was a proven coach who took Australia to hat-trick of W:C successes along with successive ODI, Test victories. As feared, the Chappell episode made a re-run and what we saw was the similar story with characters being replaced. McCullum took the role of Dravid and went onto become the captain next season which was a failure for KKR while public burned effigies. An uncanny coincidence was Dravid & Laxman were replaced from their captaincy positions after their first year fiascoes. Since they didn't enjoy much star power and media support, their replacements were as silent as a pin drop.

Indian Team & Fans have similar emotion regarding one fact. They just can't accept criticism, An emotional outburst is what we can expect from fans even if the criticism makes sense (Sharapova anyone??). So imagine the state of mind of the "stars" in the Indian Cricket Team. I believe this is what happened between Kumble & Kohli. Kohli prefers to work based on his terms and conditions and expects his team to be "his" team. His consistency with the bat and a great season as captain (sans CT17) gives him the royal cushion (specially made by the board, medias & fans) to enjoy his stint. A Kumble was never a star like Tendulkar or Ganguly or Gavaskar. So despite of not being an Australian and great conduct as a player, he has no chance to stand against the current biggest star of the Indian Cricket Team. Infact that reminded me of how board supported the WCT20 winning captain cum upcoming star M S Dhoni who asked for a team sans Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble. Up came the haters where a majority went silent for a while since he came out with successful results until failure (which paved way for thr rise of next star, Kohli). Kohli is lucky that Tendulkar or Ganguly wasn't the coach. Else he would have been the runner up in the clash of stardom.

Now the board has decided to choose a coach who is ready to actually play the role of a support staff head without bothering the stars. Seeing the names, I am bit amused. An outspoken (motormouth to be precise) Sehwag is in the list and I can see a disaster in making especially when Sehwag is quite active in Twitter. Moody had a great IPL season last year but his Australian blood doesn't suggest to be a good candidate.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ponting that Dravid is the best choice as coach. In his resume as a player, he was considered to be the ultimate team man who is ready to open, play one down, middle order batsman, wicket keeper, field anywhere and occasionally bowls if captain asks so. He got along with all players and and coaches. His stint with Chappell is a highlight considering the fact that none around was comfortable. So for a player and star like Kohli, Dravid is the best choice. After all thats what the board is looking for....A guy who can worship the star, handle petty politics and ego clashes....& many more.
